The Joy of an Unplanned Drive

Hello, hello, hello! How are we doing today? I hope all is well and I wanna welcome you to another Up To Fun blog post. If you haven’t guessed the subject of today’s ramblings, it’s all about the joy of an unplanned and spontaneous drive. In my humble opinion, these tend to be the best drives and most memorable. It’s one of those things where the stars seem to align and a trifecta of weather, time and location comes together along with a few other aspects too.

So, rather than me boringly explain what I mean, let’s give you an example of the trifecta and how the simplicity of it is probably the biggest factor in making it such a memorable experience.

Right, so here’s the situation. Me and my girl were travelling to go and see my brother, we were heading down in her Golf GTI and prior to this it hadn’t really stretched its legs on some twisty roads. So, we get to my brother’s house and it turns out he was still doing the food shop, now some people would find this annoying and a waste of time however knowing we had an hour or so to kill, I suggested a route that I know very well that was a 30 minute drive away.

So we set off, destined for one of the best roads in the UK, the Snake Pass. I absolutely love the Snake Pass for its mix of long straights and twisting corners, paired with the scenery that surrounds it, it offers picturesque views whilst showing the abilities of the car. Prior to getting onto the roads, the weather had been a bit rubbish. But little did we know at the time it would turn out just perfect once we got there. And boy did it make a difference, we were greeted with the most insane colour of leaves during the turn to autumn and a touch of fog to add a little spice to it all.

Luckily for you guys we took plenty of pictures when we were there to show you exactly what I mean and make the picture in your head a reality. The mix of the weather and location really made this drive out something else, it’s rare that it all comes together like it did this day. All in all it ended up being such a good drive out, we got to enjoy some incredible roads, get some amazing pictures and test the GTI on some incredible roads.

So what made this as good as it was? Well the trifecta of location, time and weather play a big part, but, let’s not forget that we go into an unplanned drive with little to no expectations. The loss of these expectations means you can just go with the flow, there’s no big plan and timeframe that you have to stick to. There’s nothing you ‘have to do’ as part of the drive, so you can take in the scenery, take in the noise of the car and carve up the roads without a single worry. All the other stuff like the weather and location you just take as it comes, and this all culminates into a memorable drive where everything just fell into place.

With all this said and done, I hope it entices you to hit the road with reduced expectations and just make the most of your car, the places you go and the people you go with. So whether you’re heading out on your own, or maybe you’re planning a drive out with your mates. Why not simplify it and just set a location and go, it might just end up being one of your most memorable drives. In a good way of course!

With all that said, I wanna hear what you guys think makes a drive that bit better. Tell me what makes up your trifecta and anything else you do to make a drive that bit better.

As always my people, enjoy the ride!

E.
